**** Invictus ****
Invictus by William Ernest Henley was first written in 1875 but was not published until 1892 in a collection entitled ‘Echoes’. ‘Invictus’ is the Latin word for unconquerable, invincible, or undefeated. The theme of the poem is the will to survive in the face of a severe test. In the first line the word ‘Night’ is a metaphor for suffering of any kind.
